WATCH: “In Their Room” — Two Minutes Inside A Gay Man’s Bedroom

Fri, Dec 11, 2009 by AKA William

in-their-roomSan Francisco filmmaker Travis Mathews paired up with BUTT Magazine to create a series of videos called “In Their Room,” a series of shorts featuring men in their room. That’s “room” and not “rooms.” Separate but unified. Mathews describes the series:

I love to see people being raw, candid and honest. Whether it’s about a little-discussed or taboo subject . . . or something more erotic like ITR, it gets to the same thing for me: intimacy, vulnerability. I don’t know when this started and I don’t have a grand theory in that regard. I can tell you that growing up in the country as a gay kid I always felt outside of what was happening around me. There was a lot of observing on my part and a lot of fantasizing of another place. That’s where a lot of my storytelling came from, that and making mix tapes. I recently made the discovery that my editing style is as much informed by the countless mix tapes I made as a teen/20something as anything else and who doesn’t want to take an all pass look into someone else’s bedroom.

From the series I chose Will. He reminds me of a gay Andy Roddick, and I found his scars jolting, and his need to be offline reassuring. And all of it still sexy.

Watch.

“In Their Room” is also a 20-minute short film featuring eight other guys not included in the separate short. You can watch that here.
