And, really, who can blame the Senator?
Okay, remember way back in February when Utah State Senator Chris Buttars said gays were mean, perverted, and the worst threat to America? And then he got into all kinds of trouble for being so crazy? And even inspired Buttars-palooza?
Remember that? Well, in response to the Mormon church endorsing and Salt Lake City Council’s passing of the city’s ordinance that extends protections to LGBT people, Buttars appears to have had a mild change of heart. Or transplant.
Buttars . . . said Wednesday he “very well might” sponsor legislation in 2010 that would allow local governments to adopt such anti-discrimination measures for housing and employment — but forbid them from going any further on gay rights.
“Maybe we ought to have a statewide bill that allows those things,” Buttars said, “but that’s all it allows. No creep . . . A person has a right to have a house or a job without worrying about their sexual orientation. Those two issues, I don’t think, are creep.”
And, in a local news interview, Buttars said, “I don’t mind gays. But I don’t want them stuffing it down my throat all the time.”
I hear you, Buttars. You want it other ways, too. Can’t blame you for that, either.
I’m telling you, the more we stuff it, the more tolerant they become.
