I barely recognize my hometown of San Diego! First San Diego Theater Company Leaves Home In Protest of Landlord’s Prop 8 Support and now there some San Diego public officials and LGBT leaders are requesting that Bill Clinton not violate the boycott that was created in protest of Manchester Grand Hyatt owner Doug Manchester’s $125,000 contribution in support of Prop 8.
Right on, San Diego!
Clinton is scheduled to give a speech at the hotel to the International Franchise Association tomorrow, February 15. But the San Diegans in favor of, you know, equal rights aren’t having it. They have written a letter to President Clinton:
A coalition of labor and the gay community have been boycotting the hotel since July 2008 . . . the boycott of the Manchester Hyatt is an ongoing labor dispute sanctioned by the California Labor Federation and the San Diego Labor Council.
. . . We respectfully request that you move your speech to another location so you do not have to violate this boycott.
. . . The American Association of Law Schools moved its annual meeting next to the Marriott.
The San Diego County Employees Retirement Association moved its conference to the Convention Center.
The San Diego Board of Realtors moved its annual dinner to the U.S. Grant Hotel.
And the Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, and San Francisco Bar Associations have called on the California State Bar Association to relocate its meeting at the Manchester Hyatt later this year.
And the letter was signed by a number of San Diego public officials and leaders, including San Diego City Councilmember Todd Gloria, Rick Jacobs of the Courage Campaign, Jess Durfee of the DNC, activist Cleve Jones, and Californians Against Hate founder Fred Karger.
Of course, the other side is requesting that people stay at the hotel because of the boycott. American for Truth says: “Folks, can you see the escalating anti-religious harassment that follows the progression of the homosexual activist movement? To affirm their “rights” and contorted brand of “equality” (which is actually radical egalitarianism), they need to tear down Judeo-Christian tradition and culture.”
(Can you see in the “BOYCOTT” pic above that the word is crossed out? Those crazy Religious Righters!)
