After attending a Bill Thompson fundraiser on Wednesday night I thought I’d escape the political world by seeing Avenue Q in its new home at the World Wide Stages. The show maintains its luster and holds up wonderfully in its more intimate setting. I loved the line where the closeted Republican is told by the therapist that it’s best that he stay in the closet (I agree — for society’s sake). And the line where one character is asked for a donation to a charity, and he responds, as any Michael Bloomberg supporter would, “What’s in it for me?” And the song it’s only “For Now,” changing its line from George Bush to Fox News. The show is still delightful.
I clearly intend to vote for Bill Thompson for Mayor on November 3rd. For full disclosure: I recently signed on in a consulting capacity for the Thompson campaign. As a gay activist I choose not to support candidate who favor the Republican party or the Republican agenda. I do this not because the Democrats are perfect, but if someone chooses to be bedfellows with the Republican party then by Republican Party platform, they are an anathema to the civil rights cause. If you want to advance LGBT and progressive issues, and Democratic values, then stop a victory for the homophobic Republican party on which Bloomberg is running. Please join me by voting for the Democrat–Bill Thompson for Mayor of New York City.
