Roskoff’s Raucous Politics: As The Dust Settles

Fri, Nov 6, 2009 by AKA William

This year’s purchased mayoral election paves the way for the jockeying of prospective mayoral candidates for 2013. Both Comptroller-elect John Liu and Public Advocate-elect Bill de Blasio would be top contenders and are worthy of support from our community.

Another top contender is Congressmember Anthony Weiner who has been steadfast for our community and even bucked the often sell-out Congressmember Barney Frank from Massachusetts by voting against ENDA when it excluded transgender people. (Wisconsin openly lesbian Tammy Baldwin also sold out the transgender community by voting with the exclusion).

Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer mentions himself as a prospective candidate. I heard Stringer, who spoke at the election night party for Bill Thompson, talk about the diverse coalition of New York, “white, black and brown.” In my recollection, with hardly an exception, Stringer mentions LGBT New Yorkers only when he appears before us. There are also some community board issues that will come back to haunt him. More on that later. I expect Stringer will continue promoting Stringer for the next four years. More on that later, too.

Another possible candidate is anti-same sex marriage Borough President of the Bronx Ruben Diaz Jr. Just last year as an Assemblymember he voted against marriage equality. I saw him at the Thompson election night event and asked him his current position. He told me he doesn’t need to have one as he is no longer in the Assembly. If he backtracks, raises enough money, and looks like a winner then he’ll certainly be able to earn the support of gay exploiter Richard Socarides and company.

And then there is the current “Deputy Mayor” in charge of the City Council, Speaker Christine Quinn. The buzz at Thompson’s election night event was that Quinn should and must be replaced as Speaker. Hmmmmmm, interesting. Enough said. I suspect if reelected, Quinn will continue carrying Bloomberg’s water.

And, of course, there is good reason to believe that Bloomberg will force another extension of term limits and run again and again and again. What makes me say so? Because Bloomberg says he won’t be running again. He is a big liar with such an oversized ego that his promise means nothing. I have grown to never take him at his word and to expect the opposite.

Brooklyn Reverend Herbert Daughtry was introduced at the Thompson event as a Civil Rights leader. I’ve been proudly arrested with Daughtry many times, but he is no civil rights leader. At a John Liu “ thank you” breakfast I asked Daughtry if he’d perform same sex weddings if it became legal. His reply was that he wouldn’t, as his religion doesn’t allow it. Reminds me of the racist Louisiana judge who recently refused to perform inter racial marriages. The one who just resigned.

Good for Dowd. The Vatican is an evil, hateful country that the US shouldn’t have diplomatic relations with.
