Way back in April I wrote that Rhode Island Governor Don Carcieri and his wife had joined Maggie Gallagher’s National Organization for Marriage.
Well, it looks like the intervening months have not taught Gov. Carcieri the value of equality because he’s going to be speaking on October 5 at next month’s $50-per-head fundraising banquet for the Massachusetts Family Institute in, where he will be the keynote speaker.
Queer Action of Rhode Island sent a letter to the governor’s office dated Aug. 29 asking him not to attend:
We find it appalling that you, the governor to all the people of [Rhode Island], would support the fundraising efforts of an organization that advocates against the lives of some R.I. citizens. By making this fundraising speech, the negative message you will send to R.I.’s gay community — especially its younger members — is extremely harmful.
The governor denies receiving the letter. Besides. I doubt Governor Carcieri is going to relent — it looks like Massachusetts Family Institute is of the Ex-Gay type of institute.
MFI does not consider homosexual behavior to be merely an alternate lifestyle or sexual ‘preference’; it is an unhealthy practice and destructive to individuals, families and society. Our compassion for those plagued by same-sex attraction compels us to support the healing of those who wish to change their behavior.
MFI strongly opposes any efforts by political activists to normalize homosexual behavior and all attempts to equate homosexuality with benign characteristics such as skin color, or the ‘gay rights’ movement with the civil rights movement.
Perhaps the governor can ask Pastor Steven Anderson to join him?
