I’m still working on more confirmation of this, but based on Equality California’s Alice Kessler’s
tweet, and Law Dork’s and Michelangelo re-Tweets, it looks like May 22 will be Harvey Milk Day in California.
I’ll update with links as they come in.
Gay Politics is reporting the same thing.
Okay, the Sacramento Bee is confirming this:
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed two gay rights bills, one honoring late activist Harvey Milk and another recognizing same-sex marriages performed in other states.
. . . In a signing message, Schwarzenegger said California will not recognize the couples as married but will “provide the same legal protections that would otherwise be available to couples that enter into civil unions or domestic partnerships out-of-state. In short, this measure honors the will of the People in enacting Proposition 8 while providing important protections to those unions legally entered into in other states.”
h/t to Nelson G. for the verification!
UPDATE: I received an email from Equality California’s George Simpson, who included a more complete explanation of which LGBT-related bills were signed — Harvey Milk Day, recognition of out-of-state marriages, and an LGBT domestic violence bill — and which were vetoed — The Equal ID Act which would have helped more transgender people obtain accurate birth certificates and the LGBT Prisoner Safety Act.
In addition 3 LGBT resolutions were passed by the state legislature: Resolutions to pass an inclusive Employment Non-Discrimination Act, a hate crimes bill, and the Uniting American Families Act.
3 more resolutions were also passed by the state legislature that called on federal lawmakers to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act, Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell and the ban on gay and bisexual men donating blood.
All in all, a great day.

This certainly is a surprise.
