Phyllis Stevens, 58, the self-described chair of the Iowa chapter of Marriage Equality USA, was arrested late last week for embezzling nearly $6 million from her employer, insurance company Aviva USA.
Stevens’ wife, Marla Stevens, 53, is a contributor to Bilerico, and is facing a civil lawsuit from Aviva.
The women are accused of donating large portions of the stolen money to LGBT causes and progressive politicians including former presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and John Edwards along with Congress members Dennis Kucinich (Ohio), Niki Tsongas (Massachusetts), and Andre Carson (Indiana). Records show the couple donated more than $175,000 to state and federal Democratic candidates in the 2006 and 2008 election cycles.
Details on how the couple’s scheme worked here.
Stevens, who was arrested while in Las Vegas, remains in custody with the U.S. Marshals office awaiting to be returned to Iowa to face charges.
And, of course, the Right is already savoring this deeply unfortunate story, saying, “What is interesting about Stevens isn’t that she (allegedly) stole millions from her employer, it’s what she did with her money.”
