Pope Benedict XVI Is The Gift That Keeps Giving

Mon, Feb 2, 2009

I mean, come on! This man, this Pope, this Lady’s Brunch Burger Award Winner is single-handedly responsible for setting back the human rights movement 30 years.

Via Pink News comes this news: Pope promotes priest who claimed hurricane was God’s punishment for tolerating gays:PopeBenedictWax

A priest who thinks Hurricane Katrina was “divine retribution” on New Orleans for being tolerant towards gay and lesbian people has been made a bishop. Fr Gerhard Wagner, who has also branded the Harry Potter books as the work of Satan, has been made auxiliary bishop of Linz, Austria by Pope Benedict XVI.

His interpretation of Hurricane Katrina, which devastated the city of New Orleans in 2005, as a punishment from God for homosexuality was shared by several colourful homophobes. Rev Fred Phelps of Wesboro Baptist Church, best-known for picketing funerals with signs reading “God Hates Fags,” also blamed Katrina on gays.

. . . In December the Pope claimed that the existence of gay people is as great a threat to humanity as the destruction of the rainforest. Benedict XVI also attacked transgender people and claimed that a “blurring” of genders would lead to the extinction of the human race.

These aren’t especially new arguments, but I think that last line gets close to unveiling the overarching and unreasonable belief that people like the Pope and Wesboro seem to have: Someone’s gender should determine that person’s behavior.

That by itself isn’t all that bad. After all, think whatever you want, right? But these people feel very comfortable using force to get what they want.
