MSNBC’s Contessa Brewer conducts two great interviews. In the first, Brewer interviews a Maine lesbian couple. In the second, Brewer goes hard after virulent homophobe Bishop Harry Jackson, Jr.
Nate Silver: “Although the enthusiasm gap is very probably narrowing, feelings about gay marriage have traditionally been much stronger on the right than the left, and that’s what gets people up off the couch in off-year elections . . . I certainly don’t think the No on 1 campaign can be blamed; by every indication, they ran a tip-top operation whereas the Yes on 1 folks were amateurish.”
More from the NYT: “Yet gay-rights advocates suffered a crushing loss in Maine when voters decided Tuesday to repeal the state’s new law allowing gays and lesbians to wed, setting back a movement that had made remarkable progress nationally this year.”
Good As You: “I think what infuriates me the most is that our opposition will never realize, admit, or take responsibility for the gut-wrenching sense of de-humanity that they inflict upon us.”
Tony Kushner Responds To The Repeal Of Gay Marraige In Maine: “The news from Maine doesn’t make me depressed, but it does make me angry. I’m angry that bigots, cretins and theocrats get to vote on whether or not their fellow citizens are entitled to equality under the law. Our basic right to equal treatment is guaranteed by the US Constitution and should not be subject to state referendums.”
Jesse Ventura: “You can’t put a civil rights issue on the ballot and let the people decide. You have to have elected officials to who have courage to make the right decision. If you left it up to the people, we’d have slavery, depending on how you worded it.”
And, of course, NOM’s Maggie Gallagher is crowing: “WE DID IT!By a 53-47 margin, voters in Maine won a decisive and historic victory for marriage by passing Question 1! But each and everyone of you, who volunteered or donated to Stand for Marriage Maine, who forwarded an e-mail to a friend or neighbor, or who simply prayed fervently for the institution of marriage–today is your victory! The importance of the win in Maine nationally can not be overstated . . . If we can win in Maine, we can win anywhere.”
