UPDATED: PA Senate Judiciary Committee Shoots Down Anti-Marriage Equality Bill When Some Senators Switch Vote

Tue, Mar 16, 2010 by AKA William

By a vote of 8-6, Pennsylvania’s Senate Judiciary tabled crazy Sen. John Eichelberger’s attempt to add a constitutional amendment to ban same sex marriage.

Three Republicans joined the Democrats in voting the Senate Bill 707 down, down, down. Andy Hoover, legislative director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania, says, “It’s hard to imagine this coming up again after what just happened. This is the third time this has gone down … in four years. It’s pretty clear the Legislature has other more important things to deal with right now.”

Yeah, like it’s anti-gay senators! As of this writing gay blogger John Morgan over at The Pennsylvania Progressive has not outed any closeted gay senators, as he promised to if any voted for the bill.

Sen. John Eichelberger was not available for comment after the meeting. UPDATED: Following the vote, Philadelphia Gay News writes:

“We knew this was coming in the last couple of days because some of the people had switched their votes,” Eichelberger said, noting that even though the table motion could allow for the bill to be resurrected before the end of this session, that’s not going to happen. “The people who voted for this were voting to kill it. That’s the realistic picture. Why they did it, I don’t know, because they are some of the people who were in support of this effort in the past.”

Were? As in before they were told they would be outed? Huh. That’s weird.
