New York Assembly To Vote On Gay Marriage Bill Tomorrow While Senators Hedge

Mon, May 11, 2009 by AKA William

newyorkgayassemblyTomorrow, the New York State Assembly votes on the gay marriage bill. It’s expected to pass easily, but the problem has been with the obstacles it will face in the Senate.

The Assembly first approved the gay-marriage bill two years ago by a vote of 85-61. Supporters are expecting it to pass with more than 90 votes next week, including a handful of Republicans.

Senate Majority leader Malcolm Smith, who favors gay marriage, won’t put it to a Senate vote until he knows it will pass. What’s preventing the Democratic majority in the Senate from easily passing the bill?

None other than “Democrats” like Sen. Ruben Diaz of the Bronx, who has promised to march in the streets of NYC to prevent gay marriage in New York.

And, from the New York Times article New York Senators Hedge on Gay Marriage this weekend:

Pose the question “Would you vote to make same-sex marriage legal?” within the gilded State Senate chamber, and you’ll hear a lot of hedging.

And with NY GOP Legislators Allowed To Vote Consciences On Gay Marriage Bill, the hedging is coming from both sides of the aisle in still-confusing ways.

And then there’s this from the NYT article: “‘I want to beat New Jersey,’” said Senate sponsor Thomas Duane, D-Manhattan, who said he thinks the Senate will pass the bill before it leaves for the summer in late June.”
