National Grammar Day

Yup, for those of us who have ended relationships with boys who used “your” instead of “you’re,” today is a day of redemption! Today is National Grammar Day, brought to you by the Society for the Promotion of Good Grammar. SPOGG says:

There are huge problems in this world, and then there are problems that can be solved by everyday people with red pens and a little moxie. The Society for the Promotion of Good Grammar is for pen-toters appalled by wanton displays of Bad English.

SPOGG is for people who crave good, clean English — sentences cast well and punctuated correctly. It’s about clarity. And who knows how many of the world’s huge problems could be solved if we had a little more of that?

But, SPOGG, what is National Grammar Day for?

Do you adore clean, correct sentences? Do ungrammatical advertisements make you cringe? We understand completely, and this is why the Society for the Promotion of Good Grammar and MSN Encarta have designated March 4 as National Grammar Day.

How can I participate?

Speak well! Write well! And on March 4, march forth and spread the word. We want people to think about language and how it can be used best.

Some of our members are planning Good-Grammar Potlucks at their offices. What do you serve at good-grammar potlucks? High-fiber foods, of course. They’re good for the colon. Afterward, at happy hour, we recommend the Grammartini.

Did the National Grammar Day grammarians say, “March forth on March 4th?” Hey, not only are they grammar sticklers, they’re also kind of gay because we all know what tonight is! That’s right, tonight is the real March Forth on March 4th when we will all show our support for gay marriage on the eve of the California Supreme Court hearings — while carrying correctly-spelled and very-grammatical signs!
