Maggie Gallagher is watching us. And not just at our marriage equality rallies.
Maggie has posted a video on the Catholic News Agency’s YouTube channel. (Recall that the Catholic Church was a leading contributor to Maine’s marriage equality repeal efforts.) And in that video Maggie outlines, in detail, the strategies of the “No On 1″ campaign, the inspiration of those strategies, the effectiveness of the campaign, and the human cost to our side.
In doing so, Maggie lets us know that she is watching us, very closely. But she also demonstrates a level of understanding and empathy that I found truly unexpected. Following the repeal of our civil rights in Maine, Maggie understands that we are hurt. She understands why we are hurt. She feels our dejection. She knows we are in pain.
But, while Maggie bears witness to the profound human damage she has caused, she doesn’t care about any of it. Her interpretation of her religion has led her away from her own compassion, from her own humanity. And ours. Maggie has been blinded by her own faith.
Want to know what I think? I think Maggie Gallagher needs to watch Doubt.
Watch the tragedy that is Maggie Gallagher.
