Long Island Gay Basher: “God Made Me Hate Gay People”

Fri, Nov 6, 2009

robert-bellamy-gay-basherRobert Bellamy, Jr. was arrested — and two other suspects are still being sough — in the apparent gay bashing and robbery of two men in the Lakeview area of Long Island.

The two victims, one of whom was dressed up in drag for Halloween, were walking on Woodfield Road near Janos Ave. when they were approached around 1:50 a.m. by a car being driven by a woman with three men inside.

The three men – including 23-year-old Robert Bellamy Jr. – apparently got out of the car and surrounded the victims, who were on their way home from a Halloween party.

Bellamy is accused of punching one of the victim’s in the face and then – along with the two other suspects – punching the second victim in the head and face, knocking him to the ground and calling him a “faggot” during the assault, police said. While the victim was on the ground, all three suspects reportedly kicked him in the stomach and stole $7 from his pockets before fleeing the scene.

The same group of men initially spotted the two men at a gas station where they reportedly hurled anti-gay remarks at them, Nassau Police Commissioner Lawrence Mulvey said.

While the victim was on the ground, all three suspects reportedly kicked him in the stomach and stole $7 from his pockets before fleeing the scene.

The victims — whose identities have not been released — were taken to the hospital and treated for bruises, black eyes, and bloody lips, and then released. It is not clear if the victims are gay, but the case is being investigated as a hate crime.

Why did Bellamy gay bash? He told police, “God made me hate gay people.”
