Pork is back, folks! That’s right, Pork has returned to AKA William with his weekly post bringing you the best of this week’s new music releases.
A bit of an odd week, this one is. Once again a majority of my attention is going south…(no jokes, William). South of “The List” and into the Reissue/Remaster/Etc. section.
Okay. Let’s make some sense of all of this.
Focusing on the main list of new releases today, it’s a teen queen’s dream week. Young, hap’nin fembots have taken over The List! Jordin Sparks! Demi Lovato! Brooke Hogan! Brooke White! (Maybe I’m pushing this theme a bit.)
Jordin Sparks seems to be finding her own place to stand strong and sing in. Being the youngest ever American Idol winner must make it even harder to emerge from their schlock machine with a defined sense of her musical self, but it seems that Jordin Sparks is on the way. When the title track to Battlefield emerged, I was actually thinking things were looking and sounding great. Unfortunately, “Battlefield” was too quickly followed up with the massively-inferior “S.O.S. (Let The Music Play)” which ditches any ideas of or attempts at progression and chases every current trend…including naming your song “S.O.S.” and having its chorus rely heavily on an established 80’s smash hit. After the +1 and –1, I’m going to wait for the third single to see if I investigate or desert this particular project.
Brooke Hogan…oh dear, dear Brooke. Like a scary, isolated van in a back alley of Miami that I’d be afraid to approach and open the doors of, you’ve delivered an album with a cover so startling that I can’t imagine proceeding into the actual album. How can it be good? If photoshopping is the rough, visual equivalent of auto-tuning then what’s the musical equivalent to this airbrush cheeseball? I’m sorry, Brooke. Although you’ve called this album The Redemption, I’d say you just set yourself up for one. If there’s a hot-enough single that penetrates the airwaves and lands on the Hot 100, I’ll listen. Don’t tell me not to judge a book by a cover. I’m scared!
