Listen Up! New Music Tuesday: Labelle, a ha, Daughtry, Bowie

Tue, Jul 14, 2009 by AKA William

Labelle-RemasteredDavid Bowie - StorytellersTheWiz
Pork is back, folks! That’s right, Pork has returned to AKA William with his weekly post bringing you the best of this week’s new music releases.

Slow rumblings. Minimal, but present, bits of light begin to emerge. Mostly from just below the main “List,” but we’re taking light from any source right now.

Digitally remastered Labelle from the 70’s? That woke me up even tho it’s an English import only. Nightbirds, Phoenix AND Chameleon are all remastered on this double-disc set. Um…yes, please? Imports are getting harder and harder to find here in NEW YORK CITY (of all places), so…British friends…hook a skinny white boy up.

David Bowie? Storytellers? I’ll take it! Sure it’s ten years old, but…I’ll take it!

On a bit more of a mainstream/current tip, does Daughtry flick your bic? If so, get lit today as they follow up their near-massive, self-titled debut, with the release of their new album, Leave This Town, which is bound to be solidly packed with hard-light rock that will sound rebellious against whatever it’s sandwiched between on radio.

a-ha - FootOfTheMountainThere is a soft spot in my heart (a large one) for a-ha. So when I read that the keyboardist, Magne Furuholmen, described their latest project as ”an album that incorporates the key elements that first defined the band: soaring vocals, synth hooks, yearning lyrics and melodic melancholia,” I knew they were about to deliver what we just might have been waiting for. The package arrives today.

Shout out to my smooth operators who are probably already aware that Joe is dropping another set (Signature) on us today. I bet it’s got more swagger than say…the new Chico DeBarge? I COULD BE WRONG! That has to be proven tho. Might be easy since I just heard that they are performing together.

I saw Lisa Lisa on the Fox News morning program yesterday and…it was not encouraging…there was slurring and mumbling involved…in the performance! Maybe it was too early to properly let the beat hit ‘em, or L squared was lost in emotion…all cried out? Sorry. Her album’s out today.

And an important note: Released last week, amongst the darkness, was “Obsessed”, the first single from Mariah Carey’s upcoming album Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel. It’s irresistible. Street and Sweet. Hard and black and soft and pink. iTune it or amazon it…just get “Obsessed”.

Til next week…keep on…with the pork, don’t stop.

And we are back with…
