From the first seconds, an incoherent Joaquin Phoenix, on the show to promote his new film “Two Lovers” makes even David Letterman squirm. But Letterman ain’t having it, “We owe an apology to Farrah Fawcett.”
You know what? I learned something from this interview: the best way to make a bad interview better is to make it worse.

that actually breaks my heart. i know, “drug addicts did it to themselves,” but he watched his brother (who was amazing to me) overdose and now he’s on letterman mumbling and looking like a homeless person (and NOT the homeless supermodel-to- be on bravo’s MMASM)… it’s just sad. why doesn’t he have some handler TELLING him not to go in front of people? and to get into reheb? ugh. it makes me sick to see beautiful, talented people kill themselves…

darryl,
this is a really great point. and it got me wondering if letterman, as a form of pity, shifted the focus from joaquin being obviously incapacitated to letterman’s own irritation as a way to let joaquin maintain a little bit of dignity as the “out of it star.” either way, your comment here is a welcome reminder that these people whose misfortunes we find so entertaining are, first, people.

it’s hard to tell whether Joaquin Phoenix was faking it or not during that Letterman appearance, especially since he’s such a talented actor…
