I’ve written before about the countries banning gay men from donating blood. Countries like Canada, the UK, and, you know, the U.S. that continue to keep gay men from donating. Yup, we lag behind other countries like New Zealand, Spain, Italy, Japan and Australia in treating gay people as fully human.
Some good news, of sorts, though. In response to a probable blood shortfall due to the swine flu pandemic, The UK’s NHS Blood and Transplant agency has called for the number of blood donations to increase by 50 percent.
First up? Yup. A review of the ban on letting gay men donate. Today, the UK’s Advisory Committee on the Safety of Blood, Tissues and Organs, which advises the government on issues of blood safety, is holding a public meeting today to review the discriminatory policy.
If the review finds that gay men should be allowed to donate, the ban could be overturned as early as next year.
