Hawaii Civil Unions Update: On Verge Of Defeat

Mon, Mar 9, 2009 by AKA William

hawaiiA few weeks ago, I wrote how the stalling of the Hawaii Civil Unions bill in might not necessarily be a bad thing because supporters of the bill believed that while they didn’t have enough votes to get it past the Senate Judiciary Committee, they did have enough votes to put the bill up for a full Senate vote.

Well, civil unions may not get that vote before the Democrat-controlled Senate, where a majority of senators support civil unions, because the large opposition protests scared the legislators, and the vote to get it the Senate ended in a tie committee vote, which isn’t enough to advance the bill.

Senate leaders had planned on voting as soon as tomorrow. [via KITV]

Civil union supporters were scheduled to hold a “Light Up The Night For Equality” event at the Capitol Saturday night, but I couldn’t find any information on that. If anyone knows if people turned out to support civil unions, I’d love to hear about it.
