Scottish Catholics claim gay relationships cause premature death: “The Roman Catholic church in Scotland has launched another attack on gay and lesbian people. ‘There is an overwhelming body of evidence showing that same-sex relationships are inherently unstable and reduce the life expectancy of those involved,’ claimed church spokesman Peter Kearney.”
Kearney went on to say that it wasn’t just the those involved in the relationship, but their family members, too! In this case, children adopted by gay couples.
Perhaps what he means to say is that homophobia and hate crimes directed at gays causes a lower life expectancy for gays and their families? Perhaps Kearney misread this article — Research: Anti-Gay Harassment in Childhood Leads To Poor Adult Health:
The Urban Men’s Health Survey has revealed a lot of useful information in the decade since it was conducted. Much of it “dismaying,” in the words of Ron Stall, who worked on the survey at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and is now at the University of Pittsburgh. Stall was one of four researchers . . . who analyzed a subset of that data and concluded that “experience of homophobic attacks against young gay/bisexual male youth helps to explain heightened rates of serious health problems among adult gay men.” [via Box Turtle Bulletin]
Now this, this rings true.
