It looks like the Empire State Pride Agenda is keeping the pressure on the gay marriage bill. Two weeks ago they released that great video of pro-gay clergy clearing up gay marriage myths.
Now, the NY Daily News is reporting that ESPA is taking the fight for gay marriage directly to Republican state senators’ constituents, in a move that could be a bit politically dangerous.
Over the past several months, the group commissioned polls from Boston-based Kiley & Co. in the districts of at least 10 GOP state senators.
The group plans to use the results to convince reluctant state lawmakers that voting “yes” on gay marriage is not political suicide.
The polling from four Long Island districts obtained by the Daily News shows voters support granting the right to marry to same-sex couples, 52-42%.
I love this, but unless all of the targeted senators are saying that they wold not vote for a gay marriage bill based on their constituents’ beliefs, couldn’t this tactic be a little dangerous? Relying on the popularity of gay marriage to demonstrate the rightness of that civil right could be interpreted as endorsing a “majority rules” stance on it. And we know how crazy that can get.
