I know we are all sagging under the weight
(inertia?) of the Bruno juggernaut, and I wasn’t going to post this clip of Sacha Baron Cohen as Bruno on “The Today Show” for just that reason.
But then, then, then, as I was listening to the exchange between Matt Lauer — who was kind of a brilliant foil — and Bruno as Matt talked about how GLAAD had issued a statement that Bruno might make things worse for gay people, Sacha as Bruno said this, “I never saw the astronaut community getting upset about Buzz Lightyear.”
And that one line changed everything. This is the brilliance I’ve been hoping will be in the movie.
Much of the gay hubbub surrounding the release of Bruno has as much to do with our desperate need for a leader and a nearly-instinctive need to cling tightly to any mainstream depiction of ourselves as it does the actual depiction of homosexuality.
Really, why don’t astronauts care about Buzz Lightyear?
Watch the clip. Really watch it. And notice how Bruno’s accent melts into Cohen’s when GLAAD is mentioned.
