Today is World Autism Awareness Day, and I’m posting about it here, on a gay blog, because, yes, it’s important to know more about autism.
But I’m also posting about this because, like left handedness, based on a number of recent studies, homosexuality occurs at more than twice the rate in people with autism as it does in the general population.
In fact, the first thing I thought of when I saw that today was World Autism Awareness Day was that the person, Daniel Tammett who holds the world record for memorizing pi (out to 22,000 places) is a gay man with Asperger’s (the mildest form of autism).
Queers United has a list of extensive links to sites of gay people with autism. You can check all of those out if you’d like to learn more.
