Ashton Kutcher twittered for us gays earlier this afternoon. In response to a Twitter follower telling him he was “gay” for hurting his hand on a punching bag, Kutcher responded with the above tweet. Completely great that he’s standing up for us. A cool, hot, straight guy telling the world that it’s stupid to hurl slurs around. Perfect.
As great as this, it does kind of bring up the troublesome “Don’t Say Gay” spectrum I wondered about yesterday. There’s the Wanda Sykes “Don’t Say Gay” because using “gay” to mean “lame” is wrong, which is perfect. But then there’s the Tennessee “Don’t Say Gay” in public schools because “gay” is bad and we want to hide the word and the “gays” from the world, which is the opposite of perfect.
But there is no spectrum on the “fag.” That’s a nasty word, however it’s used.
