This is just plain ol’ creepy.
Fresh off a new poll that found that most Iowans want lawmakers to focus on issues other than gay marriage, two Iowa legislators — Reps. Jason Schultz and Matt Windschitl — want to remove language referring to sexual orientation and gender identity from the state’s Safe School Act, which (you guessed it) prevents bullying of students based on a number of criteria. Including sexual orientation and gender identity.
Worse, the legislators are doing this in an attempt to get Iowa’s marriage repealed. Worst, they know it’s a waste of time.
Iowa’s NBC affiliate writes WHO-TV writes:
Rep. Jason Schultz says he’s not doing this to hurt gay, lesbian and transgender students, he’s just trying to forward his agenda to make same sex marriage illegal here in Iowa.
“The Bully Bill or Safe School Act doesn’t protect anyone anyway.
. . . Rep. Schultz admits the bill won’t go anywhere, but that’s not the point. He hopes it will renew the efforts to make same sex marriage illegal here in Iowa, and start a debate on the house floor sometime this session.
So, these guys know that getting rid of protections for LGBT students won’t do what they want it to do, but they are doing it anyway and opening up more doors for anti-gay bullies.
Creepiest thing I’ve heard in weeks. Above, Zinnia Jones — who recently gave the best articulated defense of marriage equality ever — explains more.
