2000 In Hawaii Rally Against Civil Unions, For A Return To The Past

Tue, Feb 24, 2009 by AKA William

hawaiiprotestOkay, so not the best gay news coming out of Hawaii, but it could be worse. On Sunday, 2000 anti-gay marriage protestors representing dozens of local churches, temples, synagogues and mosques, turned out to show their, well, lack of support for gay marriage for pretty much the same tired linguistic reason we always hear, “Stop redefining words! It’s not fair to God to change words! Or spelling!”

From The Honolulu Advertiser:

“I think this is awesome,” said former state Rep. Dennis Arakaki, who heads the Hawai’i Family Forum, a nonprofit group that opposes same-sex marriage, civil unions and other legal recognition of same-sex couples . . . Here, we’re just opening the door to social upheaval without taking into consideration the ramifications. [Gays would] have equal access and equal rights to programs and our education system. They might even force churches to lend out their facilities.

Yeah, how horrible to give gays equal access and equal rights. Sure there were a lot of protestors, but there is support inside the Hawaii State Senate Judiciary Committee, which is hearing the civil unions bill today. And although the bill could fail to win the needed votes to pass out of the state Senate today, Senate leaders who favor it say they likely have enough support to bypass the committee.

“I’ve been told by leadership that there are enough votes to pull the bill — definitely,” said state Sen. Brian Taniguchi, D-10th (Manoa, McCully), chairman of the Senate Judiciary and Government Operations Committee.

Under state law, the Senate could not bring the bill out of the committee until March 10, which will give opponents another two weeks from today’s hearing to mobilize.

They need to lay off the spam. Somebody ought to tell them WWII ended and the rationing is over — we have a thing called HAM now.
